What Is the Dragon Boat Festival?
The Dragon Boat Festival, known as Duanwu Festival (端午节), is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar.
With a history spanning more than 2,000 years, it is recognized as one of China’s most significant traditional festivals and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
The festival combines cultural traditions, historical remembrance, seasonal customs, and family gatherings.
The Story Behind the Festival
The most widely known legend is associated with Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet and statesman during the Warring States Period.
Qu Yuan was deeply devoted to his country and people. After witnessing the decline of his homeland, he expressed his concerns through poetry and eventually sacrificed himself by jumping into the Miluo River.
According to legend, local people rushed out in boats to search for him and threw rice into the river to prevent fish from disturbing his body. These actions gradually evolved into two of today’s most famous traditions:
- Dragon boat racing
- Eating Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings)
Today, Qu Yuan remains a symbol of loyalty, integrity, and dedication.
Traditional Dragon Boat Festival Customs
🐉 Dragon Boat Racing
Dragon boat racing is one of the festival’s most exciting traditions.
Teams paddle long, colorful boats decorated with dragon heads and tails while synchronizing their efforts to the rhythm of drums.
The races symbolize:
- Teamwork
- Unity
- Determination
- Collective success
These values continue to inspire organizations and communities today.
🍙 Eating Zongzi
Zongzi are pyramid-shaped sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.
Different regions of China have developed their own flavors, including:
- Sweet red bean paste
- Dates
- Salted egg yolk
- Pork
- Mixed grains
Sharing Zongzi has become an important way for families and friends to celebrate together.
🌿 Hanging Mugwort and Calamus
Many families hang aromatic plants such as mugwort and calamus on doors.
Traditionally, these plants were believed to:
- Promote health
- Ward off insects
- Bring good fortune
They also symbolize people’s hopes for safety and well-being.
🧿 Wearing Colorful Silk Threads
Children often wear colorful silk bracelets during the festival.
These colorful threads symbolize:
- Protection
- Health
- Happiness
- Good luck

Beyond its traditional customs, the Dragon Boat Festival continues to offer valuable lessons today.
It reminds us of:

These principles remain highly relevant in both personal and professional life.
