Celebrating Dragon Boat Festival at FPIC: Honoring Tradition
Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a significant traditional Chinese holiday with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, this festival commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan.
Qu Yuan was a patriotic poet and loyal minister in the state of Chu during the Warring States period. Known for his devotion to his country, Qu Yuan was exiled by the king due to political intrigue. During his exile, he wrote many passionate poems expressing his love for his homeland and concern for its future. When the state of Chu fell into the hands of invaders, Qu Yuan, in despair, committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. According to legend, the local people raced out in their boats to save him or retrieve his body, throwing rice into the river to distract the fish and prevent them from eating Qu Yuan’s body. This act of reverence evolved into the traditions of dragon boat racing and eating zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) that we observe today.
